Rum is a distilled alcoholic beverage made from fermented sugarcane juice or molasses. The resulting spirit is usually aged in oak barrels. Rum is believed to date back thousands of years, and is now produced predominately in the Caribbean and Latin America. There are no clear rules of classification of rums, but depending on the country of origin it can be classified by alcohol content, aging period, or naming standards. Despite that, commonly rums can be classified in a following way: light rums (Brazilian cachaca can be also put in this category), gold rums, dark rums, spiced rums, and overproof rums. Rums can be drunk straight or neat, used for cooking, or mixed in cocktails.
