McCarthys Oregon Single Malt Whiskey is a superb small batch offering from the Clear Creek distillery with a cult following.
McCarthys Oregon Single Malt Whiskey
McCarthys Oregon Single Malt Whiskey comes from the Clear Creak Distillery, Portland, Oregon. Steve McCarthy, the owner and distiller, is one of the pioneers of craft distilling, he’s been making artisan spirits long before it became trendy. This whiskey is distilled from heavily peated barley, imported from Port Ellen, Scotland (the same barley is used for the majority of big bruiser Isla single malts). It is then aged in first fill, and refill Oregon white oak barrels for the total of 3 years. Bottled in September 2013, this super small batch allocated whiskey has been named the best small batch whiskey in the world. At 42.5% alc/vol, it is non chill-filtered with no artificial color.
The nose is dominated by a blast of peat smoke, reminiscent of campfire ash, along with notes of raisins, dried fruit, and a subtle touch of sweetness resembling young Caol Ila. On the palate, there’s excellent integration and balance, with flavors of cured meat, barley sugar, rice pudding, and peat gradually emerging. The finish is long, characterized by peat smoke, oak, piney notes, and a hint of tar.
