J.P. Wiser’s Triple Barrel Rye is an updated version of the brand’s original rye whiskey and now contains more rye content at 60 percent. Released in 2017, it’s an interesting blend of column-distilled rye and corn with column and pot-distilled wheat. The liquid is then aged in three types of barrels—Canadian whisky, American bourbon, and virgin oak—before blending.
The nose offers an oak backbone supported by notes of maple and vanilla, prominent rye, leather, raisins, dark chocolate, and baking spices, with hints of tobacco, toasted walnuts, and a bourbon-like impression of fresh oak. Tasting notes reveal flavors of rye, oak sap, maple, and vanilla alongside toffee, brown sugar, baking spice, cedar, wood spice, toasted pecans, and chocolate. The finish is long and woody, with baking spices, rye, and oak spice.
