Description
Highland Park was founded in 1798 and is located in Kirkwall, Orkney Island. It is the most northern distillery in Scotland, about a mile away to the north of Scapa distillery. Highland Park is one of the few distilleries that malt their own barley, it has its own floor maltings and peat beds and two traditional peat-fired kilns. They use a mix of peated and non peated barley, with the total phenol content about 20 ppm. Highland Park is a very renowned distillery, and its single malts constantly win awards in world competitions.
Highland Park 12yr is an introductory bottling from the distillery, its a superb all rounded whisky, with plenty of complexity and flavor. In our opinion, it is a great malt for beginners, because it is challenging enough for an inexperienced palate, and we often recommend it to people who are just starting to explore the world of single malts to show the difference in the taste profile from other beginner malts like Old Pulteney 12yr, or anCnoc 12yr. But non the less, HP 12yr is also an excellent everyday single malt for an experienced Scotch drinker, and it is very nice to go back to every now and then.
NOSE: Floral, grassy, notes of honey and juicy citrus, touch of smoke.
PALATE: Full, smoky sweetness, malty, notes of grainy toast, green tea, jasmine.
FINISH: Lasting, heathery, subtle smoke, peppery spice.
