Vodka is Poland’s most famous alcoholic beverage, and has been part of the national heritage for more than 500 years. There are a wide variety of styles and production methods used. The core ingredient(s) varies among the big brands; many are distilled from a combination of rye, barley and wheat, though Wyborowa and Belvedere use only rye and Luksusowa is one of the better known potato vodkas. There are also many flavored versions. The most distinctive style, perhaps, is that flavored with hierochloe odorata (bison grass), which has a cinnamon-like odor thanks to the fragrant coumarin compound present in the grass. Coumarin is also responsible for the aromatic qualities of vanilla grass, sweet woodruff and cinnamon. Belvedere Vodka is a super-premium brand of Polish rye vodka, named after Belweder, the presidential palace in Warsaw – a picture of which also features on the label.
