Description

The Caloz family founded their domaine in 1960, establishing their home and cellar in the village of Miege, situated between Sierre and Crans-Montana in the Valais region. Fernand Caloz, the family patriarch, initiated vine care in this mountainous terrain, cultivating steep terraced vineyards by hand. Conrad Caloz, Fernand’s son, now manages the domaine with his wife, Anne-Carole.

Adhering to the local philosophy of “Production Intégrée,” Conrad, a founding member of Vitival since 1989, prioritizes sustainable viticulture to protect nature and the environment. The Coteaux de Sierre appellation and the village of Miège benefit from high-altitude Alpine conditions, fostering excellent drainage and intense minerality in the soil. La Mourzière, a terraced slope, and Les Bernunes, a high-slope site, are recognized for superior quality within the appellation.

Caloz’s approach to the ubiquitous Chasselas grape, known locally as Fendant, showcases its potential for producing wines with steely character, bright acidity, and exceptional length. Cave Caloz Fendant La Mourziere Valais exemplifies the essence of this mountain terrain. With a light spritz, chalky undertones, and a nose dusted with yellow pollen, this wine unveils a delightful array of Swiss meadow herbs on the tart palate, evoking the essence of open fresh air. Though striking on its own, its waxy quality and fresh-spring-day-on-a-mountainside aromas complement all sorts of cheeses, especially fondue.
